Frequently Asked Questions This list contains some of the more commonly questions asked about the program. For instructions on general program use, refer to How to Use.
Do I need AppForge MobileVB to use the software?. Technically, no. CMF Font Editor is a free-standing program, and can even create its own CMF fonts from scratch. However, without MobileVB or MobileVB Lite, a CMF font won't do you much good. CMF fonts are used by those two platforms for developing Palm O/S applications. CMF's are not native Palm fonts, and cannot be loaded directly onto a handheld device. They must be included with an application created with MobileVB or MobileVB Lite for Palm O/S devices. Why would I need CMF Font Editor if I have the MobileVB Font Converter? The
MobileVB Font Converter program that comes with MobileVB is designed to convert
True Type fonts to CMF format. However, it often maligns characters or
chops the right edges off during that conversion to the point that some are
unreadable --- especially with scrolling scripts or italics. For example,
it is common for a "B" to end up looking like an "E". CMF Font
Editor allows you to edit the
converted font, including such things as widening individual characters and
drawing directly editing the pixels of a character. Can I use the software without paying for it? Technically, yes. However, you cannot save
your work with the evaluation version. When you register,
you will be allowed to download a fully-functional version. Registration costs
$14.99, and
registration entitles you to free upgrades for a year.
When I run SETUP.EXE to install the program, it says that the loader cannot find the INSTMSIA.EXE (or INSTMSIW.EXE) file. Where is this file? The installation program is based on the Windows Installer, which is built into Windows Me and Windows NT 5.0, but operating systems prior to those must use an external loader (INSTMSIA.EXE for Windows 95/98 and INSTMSIW.EXE for Windows NT 4.0/4.5). The appropriate one must be downloaded and placed in the same folder where you unzip the CMF Font Editor files prior to running Setup.exe. You may download whichever corresponds to your Operating System from the following links: Windows
Installer for Win 95/98 I tried to open one of the default fonts installed with AppForge, but CMF Font Editor said that it was not a valid Version 3.0 format file. The ability to read Version 2 CMF files was added
with Version 1.0.3 of the software. If you have a previous copy, please download
the latest. If you are a registered user, and did not receive a notice
about a newer version, please contact us via the email link at the bottom of
this page. You must provide your order id number, name and email
address. If you do not have the order id, please provide the mailing
address and phone number submitted at the time of registration for confirmation
purposes.
