What graphics modes are supported?

Currently, the following graphics depths and screen resolutions are supported:

O/S Graphics Depth Screen Resolution
3.1 1-bit (Black & White) 160x160
3.3 2-bit (4 shade grayscale) 160x160
3.5 - 4.1 4-bit (16 shade grayscale)
8-bit (256 color)
160x160
5.0+ 8-bit (256 color) or better 320x320

NOTE: While some O/S 3.3 devices can support up to 4-bit depth (16 shade grayscale), the O/S has limitations that make it unfeasible to use that depth for most purposes.

When I set both ships to Human, I can't see the movement selected on the movement buttons.

The game is designed this way so that the other (human) player can't see the moves that you enter.  The buttons will still work.  You can click once for LEFT, twice for FORWARD, three times for RIGHT or four times for STOP.  The button will display a checkmark as soon as any command is entered.  If you're not sure you entered the right command, you can always clear it and try again.

A better way to play when you have two players is to learn the graffiti strokes for movements, or the hard buttons.  See here for details.

I downloaded the game.  How do I get it onto my Palm device?

Like any Palm O/S program, you need to install the program using the appropriate Install Tool for your device (i.e.; HotSync).  For version 1.1, there are 4 PRC files in the download ZIP file, but you only need to upload one of them to your device.  Depending on if your device is color or not, and whether or not you already have the AppForge Booster® installed, you will choose the appropriate file from these four:

ScurvyDogs-Install.prc This is the install program for the B&W or Grayscale version of the game when you already have the Booster installed.
ScurvyDogsColor-Install.prc This is the install program for the color version of the game when you already have the Booster installed.
ScurvyDogs-InstallB.prc This is the install program for the B&W or Grayscale version of the game when you do not have the Booster installed.
ScurvyDogsColor-InstallB.prc This is the install program for the color version of the game when you do not have the Booster installed.

For version 2.0, there are two files out of which you only need to upload one of them to your device, depending on whether you already have the AppForge Booster® installed:

ScurvyDogs2-Install.prc This is the install program for the HiRes game if you already have the Booster installed.
ScurvyDogs2-Install_with_Booster.OS5.prc This is the install program for the HiRes game if you do not already have the Booster installed.

Can I use the software without paying for it?

Technically, yes.  The software will continue to function past the 30-day evaluation period, although certain parts and features of the game can only be played when you register.  This includes the boarding section of the game, which is almost a game in itself and very challenging.  The software is Shareware, which allows you to try out a program and pay for it if you like it.  If you find the game fun and challenging, then please register it and pay for it.  A lot of time and effort went into creating the game, and your support of Shareware helps smaller programming companies (like us) stay in business and provide an alternative to the over-priced software that dominates the market today.  Version 1.1 costs $5.99 (U.S.) to register, version 2.0 is $9.99 (U.S.).

Can I use the game on a Visor, Kyocera or a non-Palm device?  What about Windows CE devices?

The game runs on any Palm O/S compatible device running the appropriate Palm O/S version.  Any given hardware should not matter.

The game WILL NOT work with Windows CE devices, and there are no plans currently to support such devices.

Every time a message comes on the screen (like after firing a cannon), the screen is cleared and it redraws.  This slows down the game.  Is there any way to speed this up?

This issue was resolved with Version 1.1.  If you have not upgraded to that version, please download it.

Will the game work on 5.0 devices?

Scurvy Dogs Version 2.0 is specifically developed for Palm O/S 5.0 or better devices.  Version 1.1 will not run on Palm O/S devices.

Do I really need all the files installed for the AppForge Booster®?

There are a few files that are installed by AppForge Booster® that are not used by
Scurvy Dogs.  If you have limited space on your device, you may choose to delete the following Booster support files, which are not needed for Scurvy Dogs. However, you should exercise caution, because these files may be used by other AppForge applications and they may cease to function if the underlying support files are deleted:

    DataCommIngots-DTCI
    GameIngots-GAMI
    OnwerDrawIngots-OWNI

I receive a message that I have insufficient space to complete the installation.

The installation program does require a certain amount of temporary space to unpack the installation items, and if you are limited on space, you may need to delete some unnecessary applications, or add additional memory (like a card).

If you already have the
Scurvy Dogs installed, you should manually delete these first to free up space.  They would be overwritten anyway by the installation program.  The following files can be deleted:

    BasicIngots-BASI
    Booster
    DataCommIngots-DTCI
    EnhancedIngots-ENHI
    MultimediaIngots-MLMI
    GameIngots-GAMI
    OnwerDrawIngots-OWNI
    ScurvyDogs, ScurvyDogsColor or ScurvyDogs2
    ScurvyDogs-InstallB (or ScurvyDogsColor-InstallB)

For more information on the AppForge Booster, please visit their web site at http://www.appforge.com.

Manually uninstall the Booster from your system using the Delete feature from the main menu. The list of files to delete are as follows:

BasicIngots-BASI
Booster
DataCommIngots-...
EnhancedIngots-E...
GameIngots-GAMI
MultimediaIngots...
OwnerDrawIngots...

Also delete ScuryDogs2.

Next, go directly to AppForge's web site to download the Booster installation program:  http//scripts.appforge.com/devices/consumer.asp

Click on the link there to download the PalmOS Booster, enter your info, then download and install the program. When you run the program (on your PC) make sure you read the prompts and that you click on the button to install the Booster to your device. You can sometimes skip over it if you're not watching. After the Booster is on, install Scurvy Dogs 2 from the 189K PRC file.

I have a Palm OS 5.0 device, but it is 160x160 resolution (LoRes).  Can I run Scurvy Dogs 2 on it?

No.  Scurvy Dogs 2 was designed specifically for HiRes devices (320x320) and the graphics are not compatible with LoRes devices (like the Treo 600).  However, you can install Scurvy Dogs v1.1 in addition to the latest AppForge Booster and it will work on Palm OS 5.0 devices with LoRes.  You cannot use the AppForge Booster installation program that is included with the Scurvy Dogs v1.1 download, because it is compatible with Palm OS 4.0 and below devices.

Go directly to AppForge's web site to download the Booster installation program:  http//scripts.appforge.com/devices/consumer.asp

Click on the link there to download the PalmOS Booster, enter your info, then download and install the program. When you run the program (on your PC) make sure you read the prompts and that you click on the button to install the Booster to your device. You can sometimes skip over it if you're not watching. After the Booster is on, install Scurvy Dogs v1.1 from the ScurvyDogsColor-Instal.prc file.
